WATCH: Colm 'The Gooch' Cooper reveals the reason behind his retirement decision in exclusive interview
Kerry star Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper decided to retire because he felt his body was not up to the rigours of another season.
In a wide-ranging interview with Vincent Hogan exclusive in today’s Irish Independent, Cooper outlines why he felt the time was right to bring the curtain down on his glittering inter-county career.
The Gooch – who helped Dr Crokes to the All-Ireland club title in Croke Park last month – also talks about his managers, the Dubs, the family support which has been so crucial to him throughout his career, and how he has been overwhelmed by the reaction to this week’s announcement.
The 33-year-old has been blown away by the reaction to his retirement.
Asked how he was feeling now that it's is all out in the open, he said: "There's a bit of relief, a bit of disappointment, a bit of everything.
"You want to play for Kerry as long as you can but sometimes the body is telling you other things.
"I'm immensely proud of what I've achieved. If you told me starting out with Kerry that I'd achieve what I have... I'd have bitten your arm off for it.
"It's been strange. Twitter went into overdrive. My Twitter feed.
"It's nice to get comments from people you played with and played against and people from different sports.
"It's very humbling. I'm amazed it got so much traction on every sort of media."
