Walsh helps Laois ease to victory
Laois 2-12 Limerick 0-9
Laois opened their Division 4 campaign with an impressive win over Limerick on Saturday night.
New Laois boss John Sugrue handed out six debuts in an experimental line up, and while the game was slow to get going, ultimately it was the home side who emerged victorious in O'Moore Park.
Laois almost had the dream start when midfielder Danny O'Reilly raced clear on goal after just 12 seconds, but his excellent shot was met by an even better save from Donal O'Sullivan, who tipped it over the bar.
Laois dominated territory and possession in the early stages, but found it difficult to get past a packed Limerick defence.
A Gary Walsh brace helped them into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 28 minutes, but Jamie Lee led a Limerick revival of sorts, and at half-time Laois were just two points ahead, 0-5 to 0-3.
Another point from Lee got Limerick within one soon after the restart, but the game's crucial score came after that. Excellent work from Danny O'Reilly for Laois set up Walsh, and his left-footed shot flew into the top corner.
That put Laois five up, 1-6 to 0-4, and although Limerick battled back to leave just a goal between them with 14 minutes to go, Laois finished with a flourish, the highlight being Paul Kingston's goal to seal victory.
