Video: Late penalty drama as DCU edge pulsating Sigerson semi-final against UCD
DCU 2-8 UCD 0-11
DCU remain on course for a third Sigerson Cup title in seven years after they progressed past UCD in a semi-final laden with drama at the Mardyke in Cork today.
As the clock reached 60 minutes, UCD looked to have done enough to advance to the final as they effected a huge turnaround. Having been down by 1-6 to 0-2 at one stage in the first half, UCD had limited their opponents to just one second-half point as they fought back and Jack Barry’s point put them ahead for the first time in the game.
There was sufficient injury time remaining for DCU to mount an attack, however, and corner-forward Conor McGraynor was hauled down in the large recetangle, with referee Rory Hickey awarding a penalty.
Enda Smyth stood up to take it and though Eoin Keogh in the DCU goal saved his shot, he was able to bundle in the rebound. Colm Begley secured the win with a late free to leave UCD broken-hearted, waiting since 1996 to add to their record tally of wins.
In the opening half, it looked like DCU would win at their ease. Smith was a constant threat in attack and he was to the fore as they build up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead before he finished smartly to the net in the ninth minute.
While Eoghan Nolan and John Heslin had got UCD off the mark, Smith’s third point left seven points between the teams. Even late first-half scores from Ciarán Lenehan and Heslin for UCD still left them trailing by five, 1-6 to 0-4, at the break.
Heslin and Niall Kelly did reduce the deficit to a goal upon the resumption but Conor McGraynor responded for DCU and then looked to have secured the game as he finished to the net from Enda Smith’s pass.
Referee Hickey felt he had illegally barged his way through, however, and awarded a free out, with UCD making the most that let-off. Heslin’s frees were added to by points from Fenton and Kelly and then Barry put them ahead by a point in the 59th minute.
It wasn’t to be, however, as DCU got themselves out of jail.
