UCD students make grade in opening test with Carlow
UCD 0-18 Carlow 1-12 - O'Byrne Cup
A UCD side featuring a good sprinkling of inter-county senior stars was made to work very hard by an industrious Carlow team making a promising start to life under new manager Turlough O'Brien.
A brace of early points from Paul Broderick saw Carlow lead for the only time in this O'Byrne Cup clash at Dr Cullen Park. Westmeath's John Heslin, lining out at full-forward, had opened UCD's account from a fourth-minute free to equalise Broderick's opening white flag. Heslin went to top-score with 0-8, 0-6 from frees.
Carlow enjoyed a good share of first-half possession and a half-time scoreline of 0-8 to 0-5 in favour of UCD was harsh on O'Brien's men. The real drama came in the 59th minute when, with the visitors 0-12 to 0-9 ahead, Carlow right half-back Derek Hayden joined the attack and pierced the students' defence.
His shot for goal was directed into the net almost on the goal line by half-time substitute Hughie Gahan. But UCD raised their game in response to that setback to reel off five unanswered points.
Brian Fenton with 0-3 and a brace of points from Kildare's Niall Kelly also made important contributions for the winners, who fielded players from a total of 11 counties.
