Tyrone produced a strong second half performance to keep their unbeaten league record and push Cavan closer to the division one trap door.

Trailing by four points at half time after playing against the wind, Tyrone grabbed the lead on 49 minutes and never looked back as they overtook Dublin to move to the summit of division one.

Cavan played with the wind in the first half and they settled well, landing the first two points of the day. After an ill-tempered opening that saw referee David Gough dish out three yellow cards in the first ten minutes, the sides settled into a groove and were level six times across the opening 35 minutes.

Tyrone were reliant on frees for most of their scores while Cavan’s Martin Reilly steered over three excellent points for the visitors before they pounced for a crucial score of the half on 34 minutes.

Tyrone looked to have broken up a Cavan attack but Dara McVeety pounced on some hesitant defending from Tiernan McCann. McVeety found Conor Madden who helped the ball into the path of Gearoid McKiernan. The Cavan captain flicked to the net over the head of the Niall Morgan to ensure they’d take a 1-8 to 0-7 lead in at the break.

However, Cavan couldn’t build on that and they managed just a single point in the second half as Tyrone, helped by the introduction of Mark Bradley who kicked three points, moved top of division one.
