Tipperary put themselves back into contention for promotion when they accounted for Clare at Cusack Park yesterday.

Trailing by four points at the interval after playing against the breeze, Mick O'Dwyer's side never managed to threaten the visitors after the break.

Hugh Coghlan scored the all-important goal with 10 minutes remaining and this killed off any hopes of a Clare revival.

The hosts had an excellent chance of a goal early in the second period but Rory Donnelly's effort rebounded off the upright with the defence beaten.

Three minutes from the end of normal time both sides were reduced to 14 men when Alan Maloney (Tipperary) and Enda Coughlan (Clare) were dismissed on straight red cards following a flare-up.

Outstanding for the winners were Paddy Codd, Brian Jones, Hugh Coghlan and Barry Grogan.
