Tierney topples Lake men

Laois 0-24
Westmeath 3-8

MICHAEL JOHN TIERNEY scored 13 points -- seven from play -- as rampant Laois pushed Westmeath nearer the relegation trapdoor in Mullingar yesterday.

Although the hosts raced into an early 0-2 to 0-0 lead, Laois responded with five unanswered points.

Paul Greville levelled with a volleyed goal after a great surge from corner-back John Gaffey, but with Brendan Quigley dominating midfield, the visitors forged ahead by 0-10 to 1-5 at the break.

Although Martin Flanagan's goal helped the Lake men draw level again, the lively Laois attack strung together six points without reply to seize control of the game.

Darren Strong's dismissal for a second yellow card and Paul Bannon's goal from the ensuing penalty gave Westmeath some hope.

However, the O'Moore County pulled away to ease their own relegation worries, with their full-forward line of Tierney, Donal Kingston and Niall Donoher in tremendous form, scoring 0-20 between them -- 0-14 from play.

To add to Westmeath's woes, Gaffey was sent off for a late second yellow.
