The game at a glance

Man of the match: Andy Moran (Mayo): He made a huge contribution, especially in the second half, tormenting Michael Shields and, by extension, spreading panic throughout the entire Cork defence.

Turning point

None. Mayo ground out a famous victory from the sheer force of an indomitable spirit after trailing by six points in the 15th minute.

Talking point

Mayo's 1-12 to 1-2 dominance from the quarter-hour mark. Were Cork infected by over-confidence when they led by six points early on and seemed to be heading towards an easy win?

Ref watch

A good performance by Rory Hickey, who managed a sensible balance between keeping the game flowing and maintaining good order.

What they said

James Horan (Mayo manager):

"We were a little bit shell-shocked in general for the first 15 minutes. Cork were on top, we'd conceded a soft goal, and it took us a while to really play like we could, but, when we sorted that out, I think we dominated the majority of the rest of the game."

Conor Counihan (Cork manager):

"You don't turn players on and off. I think we came up against a different type of fight today in terms of Mayo and we just weren't at the races, but if a group of people give you a significant effort over a long period of time, the day they're down is not the day for kicking them."
