'The curse' raises its head again

THERE'S an old wives' tale that the Mayo team is under a priest's curse which will only end when all of the last team to win (in 1951) have passed away.

As the Mayo fans left Croke Park downcast, it was on their minds. Dr Mona McGarry, from Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, was starting to believe it might be real: "I only heard about the curse this morning and now it is all starting to make sense."

There will be lots of awkward silences in one household tonight when engaged couple John Moran from Castlebar, Co Mayo, and his Donegal fiancee Diane Mohan return home.

"We are still getting married next year, just about," joked John.

Broadcaster Ryan Tubridy was comforting his partner, Mayo woman Aoibhinn ni Shuilleabhain, after the game.

"It was really disappointing. We enjoyed it but I can't pretend I'm not disappointed," she said.
