IT turned out to be a routine day for Moorefield as they cruised to an emphatic 15-point victory at Wexford Park.

Apart from spells in the opening half, St Martin's were forced to play second fiddle to a team that oozed confidence and deployed their experience and craft to telling effect. It was a sobering experience for the first-time Wexford champions, who were totally outclassed in the second half.

Moorefield manager Luke Dempsey believes the team has learned much from this year's championship and laid all the garlands of praise at the feet of the players.

"It was an excellent performance," he said.

"The guys worked hard through the first half, and could have had another couple of goals but for excellent saves by their 'keeper. They put it up to us in the first half but we put in a performance in the second half."

As St Martin's trainer Larry Coleman searched through the debris, he was not for making excuses.

"We lost to an excellent Moorefield team. It was our first game at this level. It was a crushing loss but credit to the players who brought a first county senior football title to the club," he said.

EXCHANGED

After Ciaran Kelly and Stephen Murphy had exchanged points inside the first two minutes, Ciaran Lyng and Ciaran Redmond helped St Martin's to a 0-3 to 0-2 lead after 10 minutes.

But in the second quarter Moorefield began to thrive on their outfield possession and St Martin's required two superb saves from 'keeper Tomas Hayes, who denied Niall Hurley-Lynch after 11 minutes and Adam Tyrrell 12 minutes later.

The goal Moorefield had been threatening arrived in the 30th minute, with Patrick Murray finishing an inspired Ronan Sweeney pass, leaving his side leading 1-5 to 0-3 at the interval.

On the resumption Sweeney and Daryl Flynn dominated the midfield exchanges, with Sweeney setting up a second goal for substitute David Whyte after 39 minutes.

All the Wexford champions could muster in the second half was a free from Lyng.
