Conor Meredith will not be part of the Laois football squad for 2015.

The O'Dempsey's man has informed the management in recent days that he will be concentrating on his studies for the next three months.

It is a significant blow for manager Tomas O Flatharta and his team, who are already reeling from a five-point Division 2 defeat to Westmeath last Sunday.

Meredith, who will feature for DCU in today's big Sigerson Cup match against University of Ulster Jordanstown, is studying for a business degree there and is in his fourth and final year.

"Inter-county football is such a big commitment so I decided to give the course everything for the final three months up to May," said the former AFL player.

Meredith admitted it was a "tough" decision but he felt compelled to prioritise his academic pursuits.

"I'll be finished in May but obviously it would be too late then to rejoin the squad. I've had a chat with Tomas," he explained.

"He said there was a window to get back in but unfortunately by May that won't be there. I'd hope to return next year."
