Seven points from Robbie Smyth helped Longford to victory over their Shannonside neighbours at Pearse Park yesterday.

From the outset, the home side took control and never looked like relinquishing their grip.

The visitors did manage to reduce the deficit to a single point at the interval, but further points from Sean McCormack, Barry McKeon and a well-taken goal from second-half substitute Larry Moran lifted Longford.

A relieved Longford manager Denis Connerton praised the efforts of his players, saying: "It's always pleasing to win your first game in the National League and today's performance was a great start.

"It's crucial to pick up as many points at home, especially this year, when we only have three home fixtures."

Looking ahead to next week's game against Louth, Connerton is concerned he may be without chief scorer Robbie Smyth.

"Robbie had a terrific game today, he picked up a nasty gash on his ankle so the next 48 hours will give us a better indication if he will be available.

"From today's performance, I was very impressed with some of the new lads. I thought the attitude of the team was very good. While we didn't play particularly well, I thought the attitude was top class and as a manager that's all we can ever look for."
