Smith the inspiration

Donie Smith produced a superb performance to guide Roscommon to their seventh title at Hyde Park last evening.

Smith, a minor last year, hit 1-6 for a fast-moving Roscommon side. Sligo's quest for a first under 21 title goes on; they now have lost three of the last four finals.

Roscommon had most of work done by half-time having built up a 0-9 to 0-2 lead. Colin Compton got the first score of the second half for Roscommon. But Brian Egan added two points for Sligo and captain David Maye, celebrating his 21st birthday yesterday, also found the range to reduce the deficit to 0-10 to 0-5 after 40 minutes.

But man-of-the-match Smith responded with an invaluable free and the game ended as a contest after 45 minutes when Compton was hauled down and Smith blasted home the penalty.

Scorers -- Roscommon: D Smith 1-6 (1-0 pen, 0-5fs); C Compton, S Oates 0-2 each; F Cregg (f), C Connolly, C Daly 0-1 each. Sligo: B Egan 0-3 (2fs, 1 45); N Murphy 0-2 (1f); D Maye, P Hughes, J Rodgers 0-1 each
