NIALL Carew picked up his first win as Sligo boss but it took the intervention of one of his most experienced forwards, Mark Breheny, to secure an eight-point victory over of a stubborn GMIT at Connolly Park in Collooney.
Breheny, who has played for seven Sligo managers before Carew, bagged 1-5 and his second-half goal, when he netted confidently in the 52nd minute, confirmed Sligo's win although they made hard work of it in blustery conditions. Midfielder Stephen Gilmartin, whose pass set up Breheny's goal, kicked two fine points in the second period.
Padraic Clarke landed three points from play, while substitutes Niall Murphy and Pat Hughes also made a difference. GMIT, without two Corofin players, Michael Farragher and Ronan Steede, impressed for much of the first-half - when they had the breeze - and they merited their 0-5 to 0-4 interval lead.
The sides were twice level in the second-half until Sligo's superior movement and bench strength paid dividends and 1-5 without reply in the last 14 minutes sealed the outcome.
