Two penalty saves from Gearóid Slattery were crucial in Tipperary’s victory over Waterford in Thurles yesterday.

The Cashel King Cormacs netminder saved Jason Curry’s penalty before half-time and did well again ten minutes into the second half to keep out Gary Hurney’s effort.

At the other end, Dean Lonergan and Kevin Fox were in good form for Tipperary and the pair combined for the Premier County’s 46th-minute goal.

Fox cut in from the right touchline and fisted across the face of goal for Lonergan to apply the finishing touch.

Dylan Guiry responded with a late Waterford goal but the hosts held out to set up a Munster semi-final with Kerry on June 14.

Tipperary led by 0-7 to 0-5 at the end of a first half that saw Waterford register seven wides with the breeze blowing into the Town End.

Ger Power’s visitors had got off to the better start, leading by 0-4 to 0-1 before Aldo Matassa (left) clipped over a couple of fine scores from play to kickstart the Tipperary revival.

The hosts lost U-21 star Luke Boland to a black card in the 24th minute but still managed to establish a two-point half-time lead.
