THE conclusion of this afternoon’s Sigerson Cup quarter-final between University of Limerick and IT Carlow in Limerick was delayed by almost half an hour due to a serious injury sustained by home player Michael Flannery.

With time almost up, Flannery landed heavily and appeared to suffer a seizure but he was well enough to walk onto an ambulance that finally arrived to ferry him from the pitch.

Referee Conor Lane proceeded with the final minute of the game as visitors IT Carlow held on for a narrow victory that put them through to the semi-finals for the very first time.

Barry McHugh was their shooting star, landing 0-8, as IT Carlow set up a last four clash with UCC.

McHugh posted 0-6 in the first half as IT Carlow held a narrow 0-7 to 0-6 half-time advantage, with Denis Daly landing two touchline beauties for UL.

Carlow led by two points on four occasions in the second half but each time, UL rallied to within a point.

But they couldn’t find an equaliser as dogged Carlow held out for a famous win.
