University of Limerick secured a famous victory over their Queens counterparts to advance to the semi-finals of the sponsored Sigerson Cup today.

In the end they had the bare minimum to spare over a gallant Queens outfit who fought back from an eight point first-half deficit to draw level with 10 minutes to play in a gripping encounter in UL.

However the underdogs were not to be denied and will now prepare for a match against UCD for a place in the final.

Queen's preparations for the match were far from ideal, having been dogged by eligibility rows including over one of their star players Martin Clarke, and began like a side distracted as the Limerick students raced into a big lead.

Bryan O'Shea 0-5 (4f), Kevin Moore, Cian Sheehan, Ruairi Deane all kicked scores as UL took a 0-08 to no score lead after just 20 minutes before Queens registered their first score of the half.

They added on one more before the interval as UL, who IT Tralee last time out, were full value for their six-point advantage.

James McCartan undoubtedly had some stern words for his fancied side during the break, but it was UL who claimed three of the first four points of the second half to add to their advantage.

However they took the fight to UL and a goal had them right back in the contest as they drew level with 10 minutes to play, but the home side hit the final score of the game and secure their passage to the last four.

Their opponents UCD as expected prevailed against Billy Morgan's UCC side with eight points to spare.

The Dublin students hit their stride early, but a goal from Cork senior Luke Connlloy kept them in touch before UDC flexed their muscle to finish the half strongly and take a 1-08 to 1-03 lead into the interval.

The league champions kicked on again in the second period with goals from Conor McCarthy and Eoin Lowry putting the result beyond doubt.

The the remaining quarter-final, a second half surge from DCU secured a semi-final date with University of Ulster Jordanstown. Tied 0-05 apiece with IT Carlow at the interval, the fancied Dublin students conceded just two more points to ease their way into the last four.
