Sheridan's brace seals deal for DCU
There was no shortage of passion in this Dublin derby as DCU eventually overcame the spirited resistance of UCD.
DCU remained cool under pressure to claim a win against a UCD outfit that contributed plenty in an honest battle which was ultimately decided by Meath ace Brian Sheridan's two-goal haul.
The flashes of inspiration from Sheridan, brother of Royal sharpshooter Joe, were crucial in a game that was high on perspiration, as both sides were eager to make an impression in this year's competition.
While UCD's team might not have been stocked with as much proven inter-county talent, they were not short on belief and began the contest impressively. Kevin McGourty and Francis McGee registered early points for the Belfield side, but as the first half evolved DCU's significant ability came to the fore.
Cavan forward Seanie Johnston fired over two frees for DCU before the afternoon's first goal was scored in the 12th minute, when a lapse in UCD concentration was punished.
Dermot Sheridan's long ball was dropped by UCD 'keeper Michael Savage, and Brian Sheridan smashed the loose ball to the back of the UCD net.
By the time the interval rolled around DCU led by 1-4 to 0-4, and they added to their advantage seconds after the restart. Again Dermot Sheridan, effective at midfield, was instrumental - the Cavan man drilling a long delivery in to his namesake, Brian, who expertly palmed a second goal beyond Savage's despairing lunge.
UCD beavered away and reduced the deficit, as points from McGee (2) and David O'Callaghan brought them back into the reckoning.
But DCU refused to be rattled, and a Ronan Flanagan free was quickly followed by a splendid effort from Paul Flynn as the home side pulled five clear.
McGee did kick two points for UCD, but DCU defended resolutely in the closing stages to book a quarter-final tie with Cork IT.
