Shanley holds nerve to earn battling Model deserved replay

A Donal Shanley 40-metre pointed free two minutes from the end of extra-time handed Wexford a deserved draw with Carlow in this excellent Leinster MFC clash in Horeswood last night.

The sides were deadlocked at half-time, 1-4 to 0-7, the Wexford goal a 21st-minute effort from Kevin O'Connor, while it was the excellent point-taking of Niall Quinlan and Shane McGrath that inspired Carlow.

As the second half developed both sides had their periods of dominance, with Wexford leading 2-10 to 1-10 with the game deep into additional time. The home side's second goal came from midfielder Paudie Barden just one minute into the second half, but it was a goal from Shane McGrath that hauled Carlow back into contention, while sub Diarmuid Walsh forced extra-time with that late goal.

Points from Niall Quinlan and Diarmuid Walsh saw Carlow edge in front until Shanley's late pointed free forced a replay.
