Kieran Kilcline's 17th minute goal helped Roscommon to a facile victory against IT Sligo at the St Croan's ground in Enfield yesterday.

Roscommon's first competitive match of the Kevin McStay/Fergal O'Donnell era saw the home side build up a 12-point lead by half-time. Conor Devaney impressed in the half-forward line, with Cathal Cregg operating effectively at centre-back.

Kilcline's three-pointer was a gift following a mistake goalkeeper Brian McGovern. Ciaráin Murtagh, Ian Kilbride, Cathal Shine, Brian Murtagh and Conor Daly also clipped over scores as Roscommon dominated all over the park.

IT Sligo improved in the second half, helped by Adam Traynor's accuracy from frees. But Roscommon kept the scoreboard ticking over with fine points from Devaney, Cian Connolly, Ronan Daly and Shine.

"We're happy to get started. The second half probably wasn't that impressive but we were well on top during the opening 30 minutes," said Roscommon joint-manager Fergal O'Donnell.

"The game was over at half time. We're a bit disappointed with the second half but it was a good victory. There was no one outstanding but it wasn't bad for early January."
