Revealed: Jack McCaffrey was very ill for the last three days and on a drip for 24 hours
Jack McCaffrey nearly didn't make the Dublin team today after suffering from a gastric bug for the past three days which left him on a drip for a full 24 hours, it has been revealed.
The Dublin wing back was inspirational for the Boys In Blue as Jim Gavin's men secured their third All Ireland title in five years.
But while all the talk this week was of another half back in Cian O'Sullivan who was suffering from a slight hamstring tear, former Dublin manager Paul 'Pillar' Caffrey has revealed that he was amazed McCaffrey made the starting 15.
"Jack McCaffrey was very sick this week and he did phenomenally well to make the pitch at all. He had a gastric bug for the last three days and he was very doubtful. He was actually on a drip for 24 hours so to see what he put in out on that pitch was amazing," said Pillar on the Marty Squad on RTE Radio 1 today.
"I was talking to his father at half time and he just couldn't believe that Jack had played the half that he did. I thought he was phenomenal."
McCaffrey is one of the nominees to scoop the man of the match award tonight.
At the minute I feel very privileged to have walked past Jack McCaffrey in the sports centre in UCD last Tuesday— Adrianna Keenan (@adikeenan) September 20, 2015
Think Jack McCaffrey is one of the most underrated players in the country. Does a huge amount of work. Such speed too. #GAA— Gillian Murphy (@Gill_Murphy) September 20, 2015
