Reilly tally helps propel Cavan

Cavan edged out Longford to secure a semi-final spot at Pearse Park yesterday evening.

Cavan drew first blood when they bagged their only goal in the sixth minute. A delightful ball played in by Michael Lyng was seized upon by Jason Reilly and he found the top corner.

The midlanders trailed by three points midway through the first half, but a well-taken goal from Enda Ledwith and two pointed frees from James Noonan gave the home side a one-point lead at half-time.

After the break Longford quickly took full advantage of a goalkeeping error by Alan O'Mara. O'Mara misjudged his kick-out and it fell to corner-forward Mark McDonnell, who had acres of space and enough time to find the back of the net.

The visitors responded and points from Jason Reilly, Lyng and Michael Brady earned them parity. The final 10 minutes proved to be an exciting affair, with both sides sharing the lead at different points, but Cavan had the final say and three points in the closing minutes earned them the victory.
