Five of Galway's forwards produced scores in the first quarter alone, including their only goal via Nathan Grainger in the 12th minute.
Alan Naughton and Tomo Culhane scored six points between them in the first half and Roscommon had to work hard to have six points on the board at half-time.
A different home side emerged after the break as they hit two points from play within the first minute.
Culhane kept Galway ticking over with a free in the 39th minute but Roscommon then scored 1-4 without reply - Aaron Oyiki's goal in the 50th minute really igniting the comeback for an unlikely victory.
