O'Rourke to join Lilywhites

Aidan O'Rourke is to join Kieran McGeeney as his assistant manager in Kildare, WRITES COLM KEYS.

O'Rourke, who ended his inter-county career with Armagh last year, replaces another Armagh man, Paul Grimley, who was McGeeney's assistant in Kildare for two seasons.

Grimley has since gone to Monaghan as assistant manager after turning down the opportunity to manage Armagh.

McGeeney has left the position vacant for the last five months as he searched around for what he felt was the right candidate.

O'Rourke retired from Armagh four years ago but was persuaded to come back by Peter McDonnell when he took over as the county's manager.

He has experience of management -- having been in charge of Queen's University for the last two years -- and has also been involved in coaching and managing his club side Dromintee.

O'Rourke is expected to be on the sideline in Newbridge on Sunday to link up with his old half-back colleague and Kildare's other selector Niall Carew as the Lilywhites open their NFL Division 2 account against Down.
