On-form Corrigan puts Sligo to sword
Fermanagh are very close to securing back-to-back promotions under Peter Canavan after an emphatic victory over Sligo at Brewster Park.
The Erne men made the best of a strong wind at their backs in the second half, outscoring their opponents by 10 points to three, including a seven in a row.
Not for the first time in this Division 3 campaign, Sligo were poor and over-reliant on Adrian Marren for scores.
He provided 0-7 of their total, and was unerringly accurate from frees, with six from six attempts.
However the visitors failed to capitalise on the strong wind in the first half and only led by the bare minimum, 0-6 to 0-5, at the break. It wasn't nearly enough.
"Workmanlike" was the word Sligo manager Kevin Walsh used afterwards to describe Fermanagh, but the home side thoroughly deserved their victory. They had plenty of ideas and always had support runners.
Ryan McCluskey was chief organiser at the back and wing-back Declan McCusker raided forward with three points from play.
Considering their depleted ranks – Barry Owens was suspended and Sean Quigley and Eoin Donnelly are long-term injuries – the home side won more easily than they could have hoped.
Although they were behind for most of the first half, Tomas Corrigan landed two crucial scores against the wind and also converted three second-half frees.
After having difficulty kicking against the breeze in the first half, Paul Ward turned around and scored 0-3 from play after the break.
Sligo went 21 minutes without scoring in the second half.
Fermanagh went from 0-7 to 0-6 behind to 0-13 to 0-7 ahead, reeling off seven points in succession in the crucial phase of the game.
Marren was Sligo's sole scorer after the interval with three frees and the defeat leaves them in serious danger of relegation to Division 4.
