Sligo put themselves back in the promotion frame with a thrilling comeback to claim both points against 14-man Laois at Markievicz Park.

The winners, who outscored Laois 0-11 to 0-4 in the second half, were helped by the red card for the visitors' Kevin Meaney after 35 minutes.

At that stage Laois were seven points clear, 2-5 to 0-4.

Sligo faced a five-point interval deficit, 2-6 to 0-7, but worked hard to reduce the margin.

Wing-back Keelan Cawley was excellent and chipped in with two points, with substitutes Stephen Gilmartin and Cian Breheny also making a difference.

It was Gilmartin's 70th-minute point that put Sligo in front, 0-17 to 2-10, as Laois then squandered the chance of an equaliser when their top-scorer, Donie Kingston, was off-target with a free attempt.

Sligo captain Neil Ewing popped up with an insurance score in the fourth minute of stoppage time and the hosts were - just about - across the line for a result that sees them level on points with second-placed Armagh and three off leaders Louth.

Laois, who packed their defence to frustrate Sligo, netted twice in the first half to establish a seven-point lead.

Paul Kingston goaled after 13 minutes, and 14 minutes later it was the turn of his brother, Donie, to find the Sligo net.

Aside from Meaney's dismissal, the injury that forced Colm Begley off after 12 minutes was also a blow for Laois.

Niall Murphy, who shot a hat-trick of points in the opening period, kicked the best of Sligo's first-half scores.
