NUIG show extra class as IT Tralee count cost of wides
NUI Galway 0-15 IT Tralee 0-10
IT Tralee were punished for their wayward shooting as they ran out of steam in this fiercely contested preliminary-round clash.
The hosts let NUIG back into the game after a storming start, and the visitors duly forced extra-time, before asserting their authority in the additional period.
"Tralee were all over us in the first half – they had the breeze, but we made a lot of mistakes," admitted NUIG manager Tommy Joyce. "We had a full-strength team and it is a worry that Tralee should have led 2-7 to 0-3 at a minimum by half-time – we were lucky to be only four down.
"It was nice to win the way we did in extra-time, because we looked a lot fitter than Tralee and we took our scores."
Tralee had Galway under the cosh in the first half, but their inability to wave a flag would ultimately prove their undoing.
Still, Daniel O'Shea and Kieran Mulvihill bagged two points apiece to help them to a 0-7 to 0-3 half-time lead. However, they could only muster one score in the second half as NUIG clawed their way back, with Johnny Kelly levelling the contest in the 56th minute.
NUIG were in complete control in extra-time and points from Kelly, Adrian Varley, David McCormack, Conor Guckian and Shane Gaffney set up a trip to DCU next week.
