Murphy runs riot to inspire Knockbeg in scoring blitz
Knockbeg College 4-11 Portmarnock CS 1-4
Cormac Murphy went on a scoring spree, hitting 3-2 from play, as Knockbeg outclassed Portmarnock at Dr Cullen Park.
The Crettyard (Laois) clubman raised his first green flag within 10 seconds of the throw-in when he fielded midfielder Daniel O'Reilly's delivery direct from the throw-in and crashed the ball into the net.
Knockbeg were dominant early, but found themselves level at 1-2 after Portmarnock right half-forward Philip Rush converted a 13th-minute penalty and the same player equalised with a point from play in the 25th minute.
The Dublin side suffered a blow on 20 minutes when centre-forward Shane Nangle received a black card. A tap-in goal for Murphy on 26 minutes put Knockbeg back in front and they led 2-4 to 1-2 at the break.
The second half was a mis-match as Knockbeg took complete control, with Murphy completing his hat-trick and substitute Darren Lunney scoring their fourth goal as their superiority showed.
In all seven Knockbeg players shared in the scoring as the Carlow college won much as they pleased. The winners had left half-back Lar O'Sullivan dismissed on a black card on 53 minutes.
It was an easy win for Knockbeg, for whom midfielder Daniel O'Reilly had an outstanding game, while Aidan Brennan, Liam Knowles, Aaron McGrath, Ethan O'Neill and Murphy also impressed.
