Mulholland predicts new rule chaos
Galway 0-13 GMIT 0-6
Galway manager Alan Mulholland has warned of major problems ahead over the new black card regulations after his side ended this tie with 14 men.
With a minute to go, Mark Hehir became the third Galway player to be black-carded at Tuam Stadium -- after James Kavanagh and Sean Denvir were earlier sent to the line -- and, with their six substitutions used, the Tribesmen fell foul of the new ruling and finished a man short.
It mattered little as they cantered to victory, but Mulholland sounded a warning that there will be mayhem once the league starts.
"So far we haven't really seen much because not a whole lot has been on the line. But I think it will be a big, big story in a couple of weeks' time when the National League starts," he said.
"The players are a little confused as to what they are getting black cards for and what they are not. When the National League starts and you lose guys who are decision-makers and you are not too sure why, then it's going to cause trouble. The jury is still out as far as I'm concerned."
Galway led 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time with Sean Armstrong and Shane Walsh impressing, but Ronan Steede was black-carded for GMIT for the second week in a row in the 22nd minute. The students improved slightly after the break, but Galway kicked on with points from David O'Connell and Greg Higgins clinching the win.
