Moolick strike the difference as Maynooth survive scare
NUI Maynooth 2-8 UCD 1-8
With less than 10 minutes left to play in this match, NUI Maynooth led by eight points against 14-man UCD and seemed set to sail serenely into the semi-finals.
It's a rare game in this competition that ends without some late drama, though, and this one was no different.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, UCD mounted a stirring late fightback and might even have forced extra-time had Alan Giles' late shot not been brilliantly saved by NUI Maynooth goalkeeper Shane Connolly.
In the end, Maynooth just about saw the match out, but, in the final reckoning, they certainly deserved to advance to the last four, where they will face reigning champions UCC.
They played the more forceful and intelligent football for most of the hour, and struck the first decisive blow 19 minutes in when corner-forward Michael Newman shot low and hard to the net.
That goal put the home team 1-3 to 0-1 ahead, but UCD did finish the first half strongly and points from Donie Kingston, Michael O'Regan and Niall Kilroy (free) meant there were just two points between the teams at half-time.
Early in the second half, UCD midfielder Colm Murphy was red-carded after an altercation with Maynooth's Tommy Moolick.
Moolick then rifled home a superb goal that put his team six points ahead, and, seemingly in total control, until UCD mounted that late charge.
