GOING into the final 15 minutes of this Dr McKenna Cup clash, Monaghan looked to be cruising to a comfortable victory, but two UUJ goals and a point inside three minutes made for a frantic finish.

In the end though Monaghan rallied and closed the game out with three late points to secure victory.

The sides were level at a point apiece after six minutes and that set the tone for the opening 20 minutes, but Monaghan stepped it up in the final ten minutes of the first half to outscore the visitors by seven points to two, Fintan Kelly's final score of the half giving the Farneymen a five-point lead at the break.

Jordanstown pulled back a point from a free by Cillian O'Connor two minutes into the second half but they were on the back foot for the remainder of the third quarter at the end of which they were eight points behind. Liam Gervin worked a good score for Jordanstown in the 17th minute but two points from frees by Daniel McKenna left Monaghan ahead by nine with 14 minutes remaining.

However, a lapse in concentration saw the Monaghan defence breached twice inside three minutes for goals by Caolan O'Boyle that closed the gap to three points, and when substitute Timmy Meskella brought it down to two, a shock looked on the cards.

However, Monaghan rallied for three points in quick succession from Daniel McKenna, Brendan McElroy and substitute Patrick Kieran to open a five-point lead. While Jordanstown had the last score a minute into stoppage time, Monaghan were deserving winners.
