Wexford boss Paul Galvin felt Saturday's south-east derby with Waterford could have been called off at half-time as Storm Ciara brought wretched wind and rain to Dungarvan.

"It was hard to call it football really," said Galvin of his side's one-point win. "There wasn't a whole lot of football played but the effort and the desire and the commitment of both sets of players was fantastic."

Waterford manager Benji Whelan agreed with Galvin's assessment. "It does make a bit of a mockery of the thing. It's a real lottery when you're playing in those conditions. Fellas can't display the football skills they have."

Goals in either half by Ben Brosnan and Niall Hughes gave Wexford the two points. They only managed one score in the second period, however, and lost three players to black cards.

"We certainly didn't play well in the second half. I thought we didn't do enough really but then of course we were down a few bodies at various times. Both teams played better against it."

After making it two wins from three in Division 4, Galvin now feels that the Slaneysiders are in the mix for promotion.

"We're there anyway, we've given ourselves a chance. I just have to commend my players for the effort, the heart and the togetherness especially in the second half. I give them every credit because it was a battle of spirits for the finish. Our guys showed it in spades."
