Meath stunned as Grogan inspires Tipperary

Tipperary 1-9
Meath 0-10

TIPPERARY took a massive step towards survival by shocking Meath in Thurles yesterday.

Top scorer Barry Grogan scored 1-5 for the hosts at Semple Stadium as Meath slumped to a second defeat in four matches.

Grogan's 55th-minute penalty proved the decisive score for the Premier County and it was a fortunate award as referee Tom Lynch originally appeared to have awarded a free-out to Meath.

Peter Acheson was challenged by a group of Meath players after pulling off a stunning catch and the Tipp player eventually received the benefit of the doubt from the Kerry official.

Grogan stepped up and slotted home the resultant penalty to hand Tipperary a 1-8 to 0-7 lead at a time when Meath were threatening a revival.

The Royals trailed by 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time but inspired by substitute Shane O'Rourke and top scorer Cian Ward, they were right back in contention before the penalty award.

In the first half, Tipp had more possession but Meath created the better goal chances as Joe Sheridan and Stephen Bray went close.

This win is a great boost for a team who have now collected three points from their last two games.
