McLaughlin edges it for UL
UL 0-6 Maynooth 0-5
Donegal star Daniel McLaughlin kicked the winner for UL as they edged out Maynooth.
The visitors trailed by one heading into the final quarter but two points in three minutes sealed their place in the second round.
McLaughlin scored the winner from play in the 52nd minute, moments after Maynooth sub Paul Cribbin received the game's only black card. From the free that resulted, UL worked the ball to McLaughlin, who seized his chance.
The home side dominated the opening half yet the sides were level at the break at 0-2 apiece. Maynooth came within inches of netting a goal shortly after half-time but Neil Flynn's blistering shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Ruairi Lavelle.
Maynooth went two clear with scores from Fergal Flanagan and Ronan Kennedy. UL levelled by the 40th minute and they pushed ahead through Eoin Carroll and McLaughlin.
Maynooth had one final chance from a long-range free but Neil Flynn's effort fell short.
