McGuire stars as holders UCC advance to last four
UCC 0-13 IT Sligo 0-8 (Independent.ie Sigerson cup)
UCC remain on course for a second successive title as they eased past IT Sligo in this quarter-final at the Mardyke.
Billy Morgan's side had initially been deemed to have qualified for the finals weekend - which they host next Friday and Saturday - but Sligo's successful appeal against their expulsion led to this hastily-arranged game.
The visitors led 0-4 to 0-3 in the first half thanks to consecutive points from James Shaughnessy, Daniel McKenna and Brian Gallagher, but they then endured 24 scoreless minutes as UCC asserted their dominance.
Full-back Jack McGuire was excellent, while Shaun Keane shone at wing-forward and attackers Conor Cox and David Harrington both kicked important points as they built a 0-7 to 0-4 half-time lead.
When corner-back David Culhane pointed, they were five to the good but a nice Shaughnessy point got Sligo going again.
Though Cox's fourth point putt UCC five clear again, Shaughnessy and McKenna brought Sligo back to within a goal, with goalkeeper Alvin McCallig making a number of fine saves to keep them in the game.
UCC should probably have gone for points rather than goals as they sought to see out the victory, but they still never looked liked being overhauled.
A massive outside-of-the-boot score from McKenna did leave three points in it again with two minutes left, UCC ahead by 0-11 to 0-8, but Luke Connolly and Cox ensured UCC had breathing space at the end.
