McGraynor points the way forward for DCU
DCU 1-15 LOUTH 0-9
Conor McGraynor inspired DCU to a commanding win over a makeshift Louth under the Saturday night lights at McGeough Park in Haggardstown.
The Wicklow full-forward rattled the net with a thunderous strike on three minutes and continued to wreak havoc on the Louth full-back line as the students opened a 1-6 to 0-3 lead by the 24th minute.
Despite playing second fiddle to Wee County duo Eoin O'Connor and Brian Donnelly in the DCU midfield, Louth rallied somewhat before the break to cut the gap to a goal.
However, McGraynor converted a couple of late frees to make it 1-8 to 0-6 at the half-time break.
Brian White and Paddy Keenan were among the few experienced players on view to the modest home crowd and they reduced the arrears to a goal again with a point apiece after the game's restart.
But with substitutes Conor McHugh and Gary Kelly in sparkling form, that was as good as it got for Aidan O'Rourke's men.
The frustration of the evening got the better of substitute Richie Brennan, who exited the fray on a black card just six minutes after his introduction.
And his Cooley Kickhams colleague Brian White followed him to the line moments later after picking up a yellow, black and then a red card, in a bizarre three-minute spell that will have done nothing to clear up any confusion surrounding the new rules.
