McGoran strikes as Ronan's end Kerry dominance
Hogan Cup semi-final: St Ronan's Lurgan 2-10 PS Chorca Dhuibhne 1-10
A breakaway counter-attack goal with seven minutes of normal time left was key to St Ronan's of Armagh ending Kerry's stranglehold on the Hogan Cup as substitute Josh McGoran scored the goal that proved crucial to defeating Eamonn Fitzmaurice's Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in Abbotstown yesterday.
The Ulster champions were worthy winners with Tiernan Kelly giving an immense display in the middle of the field.
They had the early initiative after Riogan Meehan looped the ball into the net in the eighth minute for a lead of 1-3 to 0-1.
Despite Cillian Ó Fáilbhe being denied goals twice in the first period, Pobalscoil managed to find the net in the 26th minute through Dylan Ó Géibheannaigh to draw level at 1-5 apiece.
A fifth point from Ruaidhrí Ó Beaglaoich (who scored six in total) put them ahead for the first time at 1-7 to 1-6 at half-time.
Pobalscoil were 1-9 to 1-7 up after 38 minutes but a long-range effort from Oisín Smyth bounced over the bar in the 50th minute to put St Ronan's ahead by 1-10 to 1-9 as McGoran's goal put them four ahead at a crucial stage. Pobalscoil laid siege to the St Ronan's goalmouth late on but a Deividas Uosis '45 was all they could manage in injury time.
St Ronan's will play Westport's Rice College to determine the first non-Kerry winner of the Hogan Cup since 2013.
