McGivney points way to deserved triumph

The accurate free-taking of both midfielder David McGivney and corner-forward Rian Brady helped Cnoc Mhuire Granard to a deserved win against Ratoath College in an entertaining game on the all-weather pitch in Mullingar.

The Longford school led from start to finish, but it was McGivney's impressive shooting from placed balls which proved crucial against a wasteful Ratoath outfit in the first half, at the end of which Granard led by 0-5 to 0-3.

A splendid goal from Mattie Gorman within four minutes of the restart put Granard firmly in control and, with Brady outstanding in attack from open play and frees, they always looked the likely winners.

David Toner's well-taken goal in the first minute of injury-time left the Meath school just three points in arrears, but Brady wrapped up the win with another terrific left-footed free in the closing moments.
