Two goals in the last five minutes helped Donal Ó Fatharta's Galway past hosts Mayo at MacHale Park last night.
Mayo came into the game knowing that a win would almost certainly be enough to see them top the round-robin group and secure an automatic place in the Connacht final. They began brightly but kicked five early wides as their dominance wasn't reflected on the scoreboard which stood at 0-4 apiece at half-time.
The teams traded scores for most of the second period with Ciarán Mylett's frees keeping Mayo in touch, but Galway still led by two - 0-11 to 0-9 - when the game's decisive moment arrived with five minutes to go. Warren Seoighe was fouled by Mayo goalkeeper Luke Jennings and Tomo Culhane drilled the penalty low to the left-hand corner to all but end the contest.
Another brace of Mylett frees brought Mayo back within a score entering injury-time but Evan Nolan's late point and a last-minute goal from substitute Niall Cunningham saw Galway see it out in comfort.
