Mayo eased their relegation worries after producing their best performance of the season when out-gunning Roscommon in Dr. Hyde Park.

And while it was disappointing for Roscommon, who were seeking their fourth successive win, they are still in line to win a semi-final place in the Allianz League.

Mayo led by 1-10 to 0-4 with 12 minutes remaining, the goal coming from Evan Regan early in the second half, but Roscommon staged a spirited finale which took them within three points before Cillian O’Connor pointed a late free.

Diarmuid Murtagh scored Roscommon’s goal in the 60th minute and later added a point as the Mayo defence creaked under increasing pressure.

However, the Connacht champions called on all their vast experience in the closing minutes of a very competitive encounter.

A pre-match inspection deemed the pitch playable after torrential rain left pools of water dotted around the pitch. The heavy conditions made it very difficult for the players but they adapted well, with Mayo, in particular, settling into an impressive early routine.

With Tom Parsons and Seamus O’Shea controlling the midfield area, Mayo, playing with the wind, enjoyed lots of possession and with better finishing they would have been well ahead at the interval.

Instead, they led by two points (0-6 to 0-4), having shot ten wides, nine of which came in the first 20 minutes.

They were also denied on a few occasions by excellent saves by Roscommon goalkeeper, Geoffrey Claffey.

Mayo led by 0-3 to 0-0 by the time Roscommon registered their first point in the 23rd minute and while Mayo stretched their lead to four points, two late points by Ciaran Murtagh left Roscommon in a good position at half-time.

However, Regan’s goal extended Mayo’s advantage and while Roscommon battled hard late on, they had left themselves with too much to do.
