An early strike from full forward Eoghan Lawless proved decisive as Patrician Newbridge advanced to a semi-final in Dundalk yesterday.
The visitors caught their hosts cold, plundering 1-2 without reply in a whirlwind opening, with Lawless firing home the only goal of the game in the third minute.
Dundalk did finally settle and, with Tadhg McEneaney finding his range, they closed the gap to a goal, but they still trailed by 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval.
Patrician kept them at arm's length in the second period, but the hosts did conjure a revival of sorts, kicking three points in as many minutes to cut the deficit to three again.
They reduced the gap to two in the dying minutes, but never looked like getting the goal as Patrician held on comfortably.
