Leinster Council awaiting report after referee is allegedly punched after game

An investigation is expected to be launched after a referee was allegedly punched for disallowing a late goal in a game in Longford.

There were ugly scenes at the end of the Leinster junior football quarter-final in Pearse Park, Longford between Longford's Kilashee and St Finbarr's of Louth.

In the dying seconds of the contest, the Louth champions thought they had nicked it with a late goal but after consulting with his umpire, it was disallowed for a square ball.

Kilashee won the game 0-11 to 2-4 but there was drama after the referee slumped over after being struck in the ribs.

The Leinster Council confirmed to Independent.ie that they will wait for the referee's report before determining whether they will launch an investigation.
