Late Hogan strike sets up replay

SUPER-SUB Laura Hogan was the Wicklow hero when she landed an equaliser two minutes from full-time at Croke Park.

It was no more than the Garden ladies deserved after a titanic struggle between two well-matched teams where defences were always on top.

But the result will have serious repercussions for New York, who have so far had to raise over €25,000 to play in the competition and must now look to raise more funds to travel for the replay.

The Ladies Football Association will hold an emergency meeting this week to discuss the matter.

New York, back in the competition for the first time since 2001, showed impressive resilience to repeatedly come from behind, with corner-forward Emma Clarke landing eight of their total. When Clarke landed a free to move them one clear inside the last five minutes, it looked like it would be the winning score, only for the Garden County side to hit back.

Wicklow had looked the better side early on with full-forward Lucy Mulhall in fine form. But a New York side calling on the experience of nine former Irish-based inter-county players were able to counter and level it at 0-5 apiece at the break.

Wicklow struggled to break down a New York side who flooded players back and picked off scores on the break. But the New Yorkers were denied a famous win by a determined Garden side who held their nerve after kicking two poor wides in the closing stages before creating the crucial levelling score for Hogan.
