Late Chris Byrne goal for Kildare foils Carlow in O'Byrne Cup
O'Byrne Cup: Kildare 1-10 Carlow 0-10
A late surge from Kildare saw them win this third round O’Byrne Cup tie at the IT Carlow grounds.
Trailing by six points with just 17 minutes to go they came good and as Carlow retreated into their shell they made their dominance pay.
The home side were far more accomplished in the opening half with full-forward, Paul Broderick, dropping deep but popping up in front of goal to pick off two points from play while adding two frees.
Kildare replied with a point from Jack Robinson and a free each from Jimmy Hyland and Neil Flynn but Carlow led 0-7 to 0-4 at the interval.
They extended that lead in the second half with Diarmuid Walshe landing two points and Broderick adding to his total.
Then came the Lilywhite comeback and when John Treacy scored the equaliser with time running out the writing was on the wall for Carlow.
As the game entered injury time a passing movement put Chris Byrne through and he made no mistake from close range. Carlow hit back but their route to goal was well defended as Kildare saw the game out.
