Laois have squandered Micko's legacy

TEN years ago this summer, Laois lost an All-Ireland football qualifier to Meath by 11 points and responded a few weeks later by hijacking Mick O'Dwyer, who was on his way home to Kerry after finishing his second stint with Kildare.

His arrival was followed by a period during which Laois not only won a Leinster title for the first time in 57 years, but also took their All-Ireland campaign into August for four successive seasons.

That must have looked a very long time ago to Laois supporters last Sunday as they returned from Longford following a first-round exit from the Leinster Championship.

For reasons which only Laois can rationalise, the legacy of the Micko years has been squandered. Even at 200/1, there won't be many takers for Laois to win the All-Ireland.
