An enthralling battle at Tuam Stadium yesterday saw An Spidéal become the first Galway club to become Connacht Intermediate Football champions in eight years, as they held off a second-half surge from Fuerty to edge out the Roscommon men by a single point.

The Gaeltacht men looked far more potent from open play. Fuerty scored just 0-4 from play in total, but their greater attacking threat looked as if it mightn't be enough, as the Roscommon club rallied in the second-half.

The game burst into life with a stunning solo run and goal from Finnian Ó Laoí after two minutes, and An Spideál had a 1-9 to 0-7 half-time lead. Fuerty lost Philip Neilan to a straight red card shortly before the interval, but they rallied with five points in succession after half-time, the last of which was scored after Éamon Ó Conláin joined Neilan on the sideline after receiving his second yellow card.

Tensions mounted when six minutes of added time were announced. Fuerty had one last chance to send the game to extra-time, but Gearóid Ennis was off target.
