Kissane class drives plucky Clyda to glory

Clyda Rovers 0-10 Miltown Malbay 0-7

Only the kick of a ball separated them at the finish but Clyda Rovers, a small parish five miles south of Mallow which has no village and no shop, were worthy winners in Limerick.

Appearing in the final for the first time, the Cork champions looked in deep trouble when they conceded the opening four points without reply inside eight minutes.

Worse still they wasted countless scoring chances, but once they found their rhythm they put over six points in a row to lead 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

For Miltown the occasion was a big disappointment. Relegated from senior ranks 12 months ago they have the satisfaction of going back to the top grade next year but will wonder how they managed only two points from play.

Recently retired Cork senior star Paudie Kissane was a key figure for Clyda at centre-forward as James Murphy top-scored with six points.

Conor Cleary, with two frees and one from play, and another point by Eoin Curtin had Miltown off to a flying start but they had to wait for 44 minutes for their next score, by which time Clyda had pushed on to lead by 0-8 to 0-4.

Eoin Curtin's point after 58 minutes ensured a nervy finish for Clyda as Miltown sought a goal to force extra-time, but the Corkmen ran out deserving winners.
