Four superb goals inside a seven minute period either side of half-time set Laois up for a surprisingly comfortable win over Longford in O’Moore Park.

A brace inside a minute late in the first half from the Kingston brothers Paul and Donie put the home side in control at the break, despite the sides being well matched for much of the opening 35 minutes.

And things would get even better for Laois on the restart when Alan Farrell and Paul Kingston raised two more green flags to put the result beyond any doubt.

After playing against the breeze for the first half, Longford looked to have set themselves up nicely for the second half as they trailed by just three points as the clock approached half-time.

However, a great strike from Paul Kingston after some good approach play gave Laois a cushion before Donie Kingston rolled another past Paddy Collum barely 30 seconds later to give them a 2-10 to 0-7 lead at the break.

Things didn't get any better for Denis Connerton’s Longford side after the restart. The half was just three minutes old when the Kingston brothers - who were excellent all afternoon - combined to set Farrell up for his major. And on 41 minutes Laois found the net again when Donie found Paul who grabbed his second goal of the game and put his side 15 points up (4-10 to 0-7) with almost 30 minutes still to play.

Longford kept trying with Robbie Smyth doing his best up front but they never looked like making any real inroads into the lead, meaning Peter Creedon’s men move on to face Kildare in Tullamore on June 4.
