Kildare GAA involved in fixture controversy as club refuses to fulfill league fixture over clash with All-Ireland semi-final
Kildare GAA have been criticised for fixing club games that clash with a number of big games involving their inter-county sides this weekend and one club is refusing to fulfill one of their fixtures.
Monasterevan are refusing to play their SFL Division Two clash with Twomilehouse this Saturday because it clashes with the Kildare under-20s All-Ireland semi-final clash with Kerry at the Gaelic Ground in Limerick.
A statement from the club read: "Monasterevan wish to inform that on Saturday, July 14th we as a club will be in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick supporting our three club men and Kildare under-20s Padraig Nash, John O'Toole and DJ Earley in their All-Ireland semi-final and therefore choose not to fulfill our league fixture.
“We find it incredulous that Kildare County Board should schedule league fixtures that clash with a game of the magnitude and it is with regret that we feel compelled to take this action.
"The club, team management and players fully support this action."

Think this is very unfair. Kilcock player Jason Gibbons wont have the support of his club mates as we have a game fixed too, and his Dad (Kilcock manager) won't get the chance to watch his own son play #Joke #LimerickOrNowhere https://t.co/Pzagxbnv9W— Mark Durkan (@Durk4n) July 11, 2018
Sad that this should need to happen on a proud day for club . Surely sense should prevail. Years of hard work by club volunteers to help develop three fine players . Club should be able to enjoy occasion.— Shane Campbell (@shanecurragh) July 10, 2018
Speaking on KFM this morning, Monasterevan chairman Matt Lonergan said: "We won't be playing on Saturday because we're going supporting our clubmates."
Lonergan claimed that the club had contacted the Kildare Competitions Control Committee on Monday to try and resolve the matter and had been informed today by Kildare chairman Ger Donnelly to write to the CCC and a decision on the fixture would be made tomorrow evening.
Kildare's Leinster MFC semi-final replay against Wicklow in Aughrim is fixed for the same time as the SFL Division One semi-final between Moorefield and Sarsfields.
The preliminary rounds of the Kildare SHC are being played this week despite the fact that under-21 hurlers play in the All Ireland ‘B’ quarter final on Saturday prior to the under-20 footballers.
The Kildare County Board earned praise for their 'Newbridge or nowhere' stance which forced the GAA to play their Round 3 qualifier game with Mayo at St Conleth's Park.
Independent.ie have contacted Kildare GAA for a response on the matter.
