Paddy Brophy was the hero for Kildare as they grabbed the last score of the game to defeat Mayo at Newbridge, while Cork opened their Division One account with a home win.

Supporters in Kildare were treated to a highly entertaining game and the Lilywhites led by four points at the break, 1-11 to 0-10.

However James Horan men stuck to the task at the interval and Kevin McLaughlin looked to have secured a draw with a late pointed free before Brophy struck at the death.

On Leeside Cork as expected saw off the challenge of Westmeath to run out eight point victors.

The game was in the melting point at half time and a Kieran Martin’s free put the visitors within a point early in the second half, but Brian Cuthbert’s team quickly found their groove to reel off nine unanswered points.

Daniel Goulding led the way with seven points, with Aidan Walsh combining a powerful game at midfield with three points on the scoreboard.

In Division Two there were two games that finished all square. Ulster rivals Down and Monaghan couldn’t be separated, similar to Armagh and Louth.

Donegal began their season in an emphatic manner with a 2-19 to 1-09 win over Laois at O’Moore Park.

Goals from Colm McFadden and Odhran MacNiallias helped the 2012 All-Ireland champions to a 13 point away win.
